Misrepresentation #4
Myth: "Leaders of small, newly wealthy tribes ride roughshod over neighboring communities, poorer tribes and even their own members." Reality: Indian Tribes have been exceptional neighbors. From California to Connecticut, regional studies show that the benefits of Indian gaming to non-Indians have far outweighed the costs. Non-Indians hold 75% of the 400,000 American jobs Indian gaming has created. In addition, Indian gaming provides over $6 BILLION annually to federal, state and local governments through increased income, sales, and other taxes and fee agreements. Tribes also contribute emergency service equipment, build roads and other infrastructure, and provide government services to nearby non-Indian communities. In 2000 alone, Tribes donated over $68 million to charitable organizations. |
