Media Myths

Misrepresentation #5

Myth: "Revenue from gaming is so lopsided that Indian casinos in five states with almost half the Native American population – Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota – account for less than 3% of all casino proceeds."

Reality: Naturally, Tribes that are closer to large markets generate more revenue than Tribes located in rural areas. TIME class this "a losing hand" and seems to advocate for a new form of income redistribution. Using this analysis, wealthy States should subsidize poorer States – forego any federal programmatic money or appropriations. On the same note, we can hardly believe that TIME (as in AOL-Warner), which just lost billions of shareholder dollars, can publish a story arguing against capitalism. Indian gaming is the best proven tool for economic development in Indian country. More needs to be done, Indian gaming is not a panacea for all of Indian county’s problems. However, instead of tearing down the only thing that works, Congress should be called upon to develop ideas to reach those Tribes where gaming does not work.
